I am sitting outside at a restaurant. A man at the next table keeps redirecting his dog by calling out his name, Dharma, Dharma sit, Dharma, leave it. Dharma, anxious yet aggressive, lunges at each passing dog. The man, sweating slightly, is trying to have a conversation with the woman across the table in between passing dogs. I am impressed with his tolerance of the distress. The dharma’s and his own. This is the sitting I, we therapists, do. We sit with the distress, others and our own.
