Victimless

Sometimes there is no victim present in a trauma survivor. Someone may take the “others had it worse” approach or the “I got over it" view point. Why come to therapy then? Well because of the continuing struggle with relationships, responsibilities, anxiety and anger. The view becomes “this is because something is wrong with me”, rather than something happened to me. Adding in “what happened to me is because of what is wrong with me anyway.” I on the other hand sit in great empathy for both the victim and survivor, seeing not what is wrong with the person but what happened to them. I don’t experience a conflict between us, I am holding two ends of the same string, and so we are joined, even if we use different language.
